Description
Charlotte was 11 years old when she came across that postcard in the thrift store. “Greetings from Tahiti”. The stark contrast of the white waves crashing against the black sand beach that peeked through the large block letters on the front had always captivated her. She had dreamed of Tahiti and its glass like waters since she was a little girl.
She never expected to make the trip alone, and not under these conditions. Her mother was supposed to be here too. Charlotte’s eyes grew heavy as the tears began to pool. She picked up another piece of the purple and blue sea glass, knowing that it would have been her mother’s favorite. Charlotte focused her thoughts on the promises she made to her mother as they sat in the hospital room, “Ok Mom, you win. No regrets, only fun”.
Charlotte chuckled, for perhaps the first time in months, as she walked along the shoreline searching for more of the Twilight sea glass. In that moment, Tahiti’s crystal clear ocean and luscious palm trees provided a sense of tranquility that had been lost to her. Contentment and joy, an inner peace that had been ripped from her life, suddenly returned in the most inexplicable way. A smile crept across her face as each intentioned step shoveled a small pile of sand behind her, the chuckle giving way to a joyous laugh. She spoke, just under her breath, “Alright mom, here's a hard one for you!” “What is the sound your foot makes as you walk along the wet beach”?
“It’s not your foot, that makes the noise. It’s the sand, and ocean, together telling you welcome home”. The thick accent stopped her in her tracks. She looked up to see Manu, the instructor from her scuba excursion earlier that day. Charlotte, feeling foolish for speaking out loud to her mother, suddenly regretted taking that class as he smiled at her. “You found the best part of the island for collecting that glass. The ocean has picked this as her favorite spot to return to us what we’ve lost. Seeing as you didn’t have that same smile during the scuba class, it looks like she works with more than just the sea glass too"...
